The writer and spiritual teacher Steve Taylor recently sent out this newsletter – it might be inspiring for you:
“I hope you are well. The world seems like a different place to when I wrote to you last month. It’s amazing how quickly everything has changed. It’s a big upheaval for everyone, and I’m sure that some of you are feeling anxious. But I feel that the virus presents an opportunity too. I think there may be some positive aspects of it, and some positive changes that may come about.
Firstly, the crisis may help us to slow down and stop living lives of constant activity and distraction. Maybe now we’ll re-attune to ourselves, each other and to the present moment. Maybe we’ll learn to be, instead just to do. It feels as if we’re all going on a spiritual retreat for a while, and every period of retreat brings wisdom and self-knowledge.
Secondly, the virus will remind us that we are one species, and that we can only survive and flourish by connecting with each other as fellow humans, and letting go of superficial identities of nationality, ethnicity and religion. Physically we all consist of the same atoms and molecules. Spiritually we all consist of the same soul-force. Differences of nationality and religion are illusory – just labels created by the ego to defend and maintain itself. Nationalism is an illusion. In reality there are no countries – just groups of human beings who are no different to one another, living on different parts of the earth’s surface.
And thirdly, the crisis will remind us that material wealth is not the most important thing in life. We seek material wealth at the expense of our spiritual health. The more we focus on earning money to buy unnecessary goods and pleasures, the more arid and discontented we become inside. So in this time of reduced economic activity and material wealth, I think we’ll find more spiritual health.
Hopefully we will remember these lessons when the crisis is over.
Here’s a poem I’ve written about the opportunity that the virus presents to us:
Time to Let Go (on the opportunity presented by the coronavirus)
It’s time to drop our masks and roles
so we can rediscover our true selves.
It’s time to stop accumulating
so we can appreciate what we already have.
It’s time to let go of future plans and goals
so we can embrace the present.
It’s time to turn down the noise
so we can hear the soothing voice of silence.
It’s time to stop losing ourselves in activity
so we can find ourselves again, in stillness.
And once we’ve let go of everything, we’ll realise
that we already have enough
Thanks for these wonderful reminders Steve! (his website is http://www.stevenmtaylor.com)
Much love to you all! xx
